I conceive the Brazil 2000 Series as a set of works of various
media, like Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras. If in his Bachianas
Villa-Lobos fused elements of Brazilian music with stylistic features of
Bach's music, in the works of Brazil 2000 Series I have been seeking
to make a blend between elements of Brazilian music with stylistic and
aesthetic features of Minimalism. I believe that the formative
elements of Brazilian music are a fountain of inexhaustible resources for a
composer, and that Minimalism is one of the most significant aesthetic
movements in the second half of the XX century. In this way I have been
seeking a balance between the national and universal elements, searching for
an aesthetic that is both inclusive and noticeably personal. |
